Hanging Signs

These signs were not without their danger, for we read that in 1733. At Royston, in Cambridgeshire, a man was killed by the sign of the George in High Street, falling upon him as he was driving his wagon.

Shirley, the dramatist, makes a drunkard tells his landlord to

"take a swing

On his sign post."
