Southtown and Gorleston
At The Mouth Of The Yare
By Colin Tooke
The inhabitants and landowners of both the hamlet of Southtown and the village of Gorleston were in almost continuous conflict with their large neighbour, Great Yarmouth, for over 500 years, a conflict that led to the Gorleston men proclaiming:
Gorleston was Gorleston ere Yarmouth begun,
And will be Gorleston when Yarmouth Gone.
Well time will tell! This booklet looks back over the years in Gorleston and Southtown, using records, oral history and the evidence of photographs to tell the story.
