The Town Centre
Past & Pesent
The Market Place has been at the centre of town life for hundreds of years. It was the place where people gathered to celebrate, to be entertained and most importantly to trade.
In 1771 it was described as "the finest and best furnished of any town in England of its size". This book looks at the market and town centre through the years down to the present day, recording the changes to the shops and streets.
With over 50 illustrations the book records the market place, the plains and shops that surround it, other commercial buildings in this area and the annual fair, which have all been part of the town centre scene for almost four hundred years.
